Casting Call: 'Mister Stokes: The Man-Woman of Manchester'

Pagelight are looking for actors to perform in our new production, 'Mister Stokes: The Man-Woman of Manchester', which will be presented at this year's LGBT History Festival. Pagelight have secured Arts Council funding to perform this short new drama, which has been written by Abi Haynes and will be directed by Helen Parry.

Harry Stokes was found drowned in the River Irewell in 1859. When his body was examined he was found to be biologically female, though he had lived as a man and married twice. This short drama explores the fascinating history of Mister Stokes and the women he called ‘wife’.

The piece is a two-hander based on the life of a Victorian trans pioneer whose story has been largely forgotten. It is a paid job, with 40 hours contracted work to cover rehearsals and performances. There may be subsequent performances.

You can apply for the role here or by contacting us.

Roles:

Mister Stokes: TRANS* MALE; 50, Manchester/Lancashire accent.

‘Wife’: CIS FEMALE; 30s-40s, Manchester/Lancashire accent.

Creative Team:

Director: Helen Parry

Stage Manager: Phil Buckley

Writer: Abi Hynes

*We are seeking an actor who self-identifies as a trans male.
